A Literary Calaverita: Te Quiero Amorir

Literary Calaveras are a style of poetry that are specifically written to celebrate Dia De Los Muertos, a Mexican tradition that holds respect and remembrance of our deceased friends and family. On this day, we are reminded that death is inevitable and that the veil between life and death is very thin. Between November 1-2, Latinx around the world put together altars with Mexican marigolds (cempasuchil), food offerings, candles, sugar skulls, and most importantly photos of loved ones. By making an offering and lighting candles, souls are able to find their way back to Earth and celebrate with us. In Calaveritas Literarias, the author acknowledges death by using light hearted humor. This type of poem is made up of 4 stanzas, each with 4 lines that contain 8 syllables. As we celebrate the Day of the Dead, this Calaverita Literaria is dedicated to those who have died of self-inflicted acts and to their suicide survivors. Today’s dark humor enables statements like “I want to die”, “Just kill me”, or “I just died” to be used commonly and thoughtlessly; the words we speak are very powerful. In the United States, one person dies from suicide every 12.3 minutes. Be considerate in your word choice and be kind to Death.

Te Quiero Amorir

Cempasuchil cempasuchil
Dime que nos vemos pronto
Deseo escuchar tu voz
Cuentame, me quieres o no?

Estaras muy ocupado?
Tal vez con mucho que hacer?
Te haz olvidado de mi?
Cempasuchil, dime porque?

Cempasuchil cempasuchil
Haz escuchado tu buzon?
Intente llamar y textear amor,
Te extrano un monton

Te pienso y te espero
Amor, yo te quiero amorir
Lista para tu llegada
Cempasuchil, me quiero ir
